Gifted Healthcare Jobs: Empowering Young Activists in Flint

The city of Flint has been plagued by a series of health crises in recent years, including the infamous water crisis that left hundreds of children suffering from lead poisoning and other serious health issues. However, amidst this turmoil, a group of young activists have emerged as beacons of hope, using their experiences to drive positive change in their community.

The Flint Public Health Youth Academy is one such organization, created to empower young people to take an active role in shaping the future of public health in their city. Through their work, they are providing a platform for young voices to be heard and creating opportunities for them to develop valuable skills in healthcare leadership.

Asia, 20, and Cruz Duhart, 22, are two such individuals who have been involved with the academy since its inception. Both have experienced firsthand the devastating effects of the water crisis on their community and have dedicated themselves to making a difference.

'I felt like people already had an opinion about us, even before we could form our own opinions,' says Asia, now an aspiring accountant. 'Growing up in Flint can be tough, but I believe that by working together, we can create positive change.'

Cruz agrees, adding, 'We want to help change the perception of our city and show outsiders that we are capable of greatness. We know that Flint is still struggling, with many children living in poverty and struggling in school. But we also know that we have the power to make a difference.'

The academy's programs are designed to equip young people with the skills and knowledge they need to become effective advocates for public health. Participants take part in initiatives such as providing input on public health policies, participating in social issue campaigns, distributing water filters, and offering free water testing for homeowners.

For those who have experienced the trauma of the water crisis firsthand, this work is personal. Dozens of children who were affected by the crisis are now teenagers and young adults, using their experiences to drive advocacy efforts. They know all too well the devastating effects of lead poisoning, which can cause a range of serious health issues, including stomach aches, skin rashes, and hair loss.

Despite the challenges they face, these young activists remain determined to make a difference in their community. As they continue to grow and develop as leaders, it is clear that the future of public health in Flint is in good hands.
